Ever since a groin strain in the AC Milan game in June, Matt has been battling the injury. He was hoping it would only keep him out for 2-3 games. Almost 2 months later and TONS of hard work; Matt is back! It was so great to see him out there again. They played Vancouver on Wednesday night and Matt was welcomed whole heartily from the home crowd. It was also special that our friend, Bob from Texas was visiting and able to watch the game. Cynthia and Nelson were also there, cheering him on!
Matt played really well and made some big saves. They maintained a 0-0 score until the 87th minute. They ended up losing 0-1. A loss is never fun but regardless, Matt had a solid game. The team is off to Baltimore, Maryland this weekend for a game on Saturday night.

AC Milan was here for an international friendly game on Wednesday and the whole city was excited! I've never been to a game before where everyone was cheering for both teams. It was loud, electric and exciting. There were almost 48,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium to watch Ronaldihno, one of the world's best players.
Matt was busy from the first minute of the game. He faced 12 shots and had a handful of one-on-one saves. He played great and it was fun to watch, even though he got scored on 3 times! The players on AC Milan are so skillful and beautiful to watch. The Impact scored in the 15th minute. It was 3-1 when Matt left the game in the 73rd minute. Every player on the team got the experience to play that night. The game ended with a score of 4-1.
Sydney was genuinely disappointed that the Impact didn't win. I tried to explain to her that they were playing against some of the best players in the world. It didn't matter to her though. She held up a sign for her dad the whole game above her head. The sign she made said "Go Impact. I love you Dad" It was quite decorative with hearts and flower stickers. It's fun that the kids are actually understanding soccer and watching the game now, as opposed to just watching the mascot TacTic! There are a handful of pictures from the game added in the AC Milan photo album.

Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A, was here yesterday for an International friendly game. The Impact tied them 1-1 and it was a fun game to watch. They have great players, rightfully so with multi-million dollar salaries! Slightly different than any team in the States or Canada! Matt played the first half and had 2 big saves in the first 20 minutes. The Impact scored early to make it 1-0 at the half. The picture below is of Matt with Fiorentina's goalkeeper, Sebastien Frey whom he really respects (taken by the team photographer).
The team just got back from a week-long road trip on the west coast. They tied Vancouver 0-0 and beat Portland 1-0. They are first in the league right now with a 3-1-2 record. They will be home for the next week with a Canadian championship game, a league game and then another International friendly game against AC Milan in the Olympic Stadium.

The worst-kept secret in Major League Soccer finally became official on Friday.
With Montreal Impact owner Joe Saputo looking on, MLS commissioner Don Garber announced at a press conference that Montreal has been granted an expansion franchise and will join the league in 2012.
"We are proud to welcome Montreal, the second largest French-speaking city in the world and a multicultural metropolis whose residents are deeply passionate about the world's game, to Major League Soccer," Garber said in a statement.
The Saputo-owned Montreal franchise will become the 19th team in MLS, and the third Canadian outfit — Toronto FC began play in MLS in 2007, while the Vancouver Whitecaps are slated to enter the league next year.
The Impact currently compete in the USSF D2 Pro League (one level below MLS).
"I am extremely proud of the acquisition of an MLS team," Saputo said. "This is what Montreal deserved: a great league within a great city."

The home opener was during the day on Sunday and what a beautiful day it was. We had the Vallacorbas join us and everyone had such a great time. The kids ate the WHOLE game....literally, they put away a whole day's worth of food during the 2 hours! They also made an impressive cheering section for Matt complete with clappers, goalie gloves and finger crossing!
The game could have been prettier but they managed a 1-1 tie. They are off to Toronto today for their first game in the Canadian Championship against Toronto FC. For those in Montreal, you can watch it on Wednesday night at 8 pm on Sportsnet. It should be an exciting game! Allez L'Impact!

The start of the season is here! After a 3-month preseason, the Impact started the season tonight in Texas against the Austin Aztecs. It unfortunately didn’t go the way they had hoped though, they lost 0-2. There was a goal in each of the halves & there weren’t many offensive chances for us throughout the game.
One highlight was that Matt had the chance to see Richard Farrer in Austin. I wish I could have sat in the stands to catch up and watch the game with him, Janet and new baby Catherine!
Next weekend, they are in Antigua, playing against the National team there. Then, the following weekend they have their home opener against Portland, here in Montreal.

Matt has been in Portugal for 2 weeks now for their first preseason trip. If you're picturing him basking in the sun, indulging in Portugal's outdoor cafe's and eating copious amounts of fish and Portuguese delicacies....you're WRONG! The whole idea of them being in Portugal was to play against good competition and be in good weather. The good weather didn't exist and in fact they got hit with a hurricane while they were there. They DID get to play against 3 good teams though. In soggy conditions, they won and tied the 2 games that Matt played in. Despite the bad weather they made the most of the trip....AND did eat well. He said the fish was amazing!
To add to their misfortune, their flight from France to here was canceled yesterday. The kids were SO disappointed. I've been counting down the days until he gets home...and now I had to add a day! We pick him up from their airport today at 3:30. Can't wait!

Matt and the team took off yesterday for Portugal for their first preseason road trip. After a month of playing in Montreal on the turf, the guys are ready to be in warmer weather and on the grass fields. They are in Melgaço, near the border of Spain.
Matt called today and they made it there safely. They have training tomorrow and already have a game on Wednesday. They'll be there for the next 2 weeks. Good luck sweetie. We already miss you!

Matt made it back to Montreal safely tonight. He headed there solo for the start of preseason. The kids and I will follow him at the end of the month. Preseason starts up tomorrow with meetings and physicals. They will spend a month in Montreal and then they have a 2 week trip planned to Portugal.
It's Matt's 4th season with the Impact and his 13th preseason! He's feeling great and ready to start another successful year!
